Frequently Asked Questions

  • As early as 12 weeks and as late as 36 weeks. It just depends on how much you want to plan and get to know your doula. The sweet spot is early in the second trimester.

  • Definitely not! A doula is there to support cesareans, VBACs (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean), inductions, epidurals…etc just as much as we are there to support a home birth with no intervention. A doula is helpful for anyone wanting choice, respect, and ownership of their own birth.

  • Absolutely. A doula is there to help your birth partner just as much as we are there to help you. A doula is often helpful in teaching the partner various comfort techniques and allowing them to take breaks. We are also a source of knowledge and security when bigger decisions or doubts arise.

  • A midwife is a trained medical professional. They play a similar role to an OB in birth, but focus more on a holistic birth process with minimal intervention. A doula is a non-medical support person who offers emotional, physical, and informational support but does not perform medical procedures or give medical advice, though we are well versed in medical terms and techniques relating to birth.

  • It comes from the Greek work doúlē, which originally meant “woman who serves.”
